Астрофизика космических лучей и физика космоса 11 июля, 2003 - 11:00

The seminar will review the evolution of our understanding about the dynamics of the inner magnetosphere and the observational support for this evolution. The discussion will include the processes thought to form the ring current and partial ring current, the use of Dst as a measure of the storm time ring current and the Parker-Dessler-Sckopke relationship. Analysis of the relationship between geomagnetic storms and substorms will be presented. Methods for measuring both the temporal and spatial development of the ring current will be presented. The results from the Michigan RAM (Ring current Atmospheric interaction Model) for several simulations of magnetic storms and Steady Magnetospheric Convection (SMC) events will be contrasted with observations. The relative importance of an enhanced convection electric field versus substorm energetic particle injections on ring current development will be analyzed. Finally we have coupled the BATS-R-US MHD magnetospheric model with the Inner Magnetospheric drift physics obtained from a reformulation of the Rice Convection Model. Initial results from this fully two-way coupled code will be presented and discussed.
