Laboratory of space electrodynamics

Laboratory of space electrodynamics (LSE) was organized in 1969. Its first Head was Sc.D. Velior Shabansky. Since 1985 it is leaded by Sc.D. Alexey Kropotkin.

The scientists of the Laboratory continue the studies initiated by Velior Shabansky who founded theoretical basis for physical processes in the near-Earth and interplanetary space. He obtained a number of extremely important results in the field of theory of high-energy particles interactions with shock waves.

The scientists of the Laboratory carried out theoretical studies of the Earth's magnetosphere dynamics. They developed a new approach to the problem of solar wind interaction with magnetosphere taking into consideration interplanetary magnetic field.

The effects of self-assembly in such systems as solar corona, heliosphere and magnetosphere were studied.

A theory of large-scale electromagnetic inhomogenuities in the non-stationary solar wind flux was developed.

Developed theoretical model for generation of magnetospheric inhomogenuities which determine complicated complex of geophysical phenomena in the auroral region explains acceleration of auroral electrons in the areas of decreased ionospheric density.

The scientisits of the Laboratory studied characteristic features of high-energy particles movement after their penetration to high-latitudinal traps at the day-side of the magnetosphere and their role in the general dynamics of radiation belts.

There were developed the fundamentals of the ions movement in thin plasma layers and the theory of self-consistent anisotropic kinetic thin current layer on the basis of a specific adiabatic invariant corresponding to oscillation of the particles while they are moving in the layer.

Dynamic mechanism of energy transformation during the production of thin layers in space plasma was found and studies and its role in the global plasma transformations in space was clarified.

Developed non-linear theory of kinetic thin current layer along with the results of computer simulation have shown that the processes of quick structure altertions are accompanied by strong effects of energy transformation from magnetic type into ion flux one. This factor is found to be critical for sub-storm activation.

It was found a character of evolution of magnetospheric configuration at different stages of magnetospheric sub-storm - activity cycle of open non-linear magnetospheric-ionospheric plasma. Approaches based both on the pronciples of non-linear dynamics and on the ideas of kinetic theory of collisionless plasma allowed to developed a model of cataыtrophic quick breakdown of balance of magnetospheric system - explosive stage of magnetospheric sub-storm.
